“When my class learned that they were invited to create ornaments for the National Christmas Tree Lighting, the excitement in the room was electric. My 5th-grade students are a creative, enthusiastic group who truly enjoy expressing themselves through art. As a teacher, one of my guiding philosophies is to weave art into as much of our learning as possible. A lot of things inspired me to do my California ornament. First and foremost, the bear surfing was inspired by our state animal, the grizzly bear. The surfing is inspired by the heavy cultural effect it had on California, which is also often considered the birthplace of modern surfing in the US. In the background is the Hollywood sign, which is a famous landmark in California, as well as ‘California’ in graffiti letters, representing the great deal of graffiti/expression and murals in major cities such as Oakland and LA.
