Mariana Islands

“Our ornaments celebrate the unique culture and natural beauty of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI). As 5th-graders living here, we wanted to highlight the special places, traditions, and stories of our home. The CNMI has two main cultures, Chamorro and Carolinian. Some students drew Chamorro latte stones, strong pillars used long ago to support homes. Others created Carolinian weaving patterns and traditional clothing. They featured famous places like the Grotto, Bird Island, Bantalan Beach, and Managaha Island, known for clear waters. These ornaments tell the story of our islands, people, and values while sharing the spirit of the Northern Mariana Islands with everyone.” – Yeji L., Teacher

My drawing represents the beautiful and welcoming people in the CNMI. I came up with this design and idea by seeing how people in the CNMI treat everyone. They throw us parties, sing us songs, and dance. However, my personal favorite is the fiesta. I saw how people laughed, made memories, and more. Therefore, I decided that my drawing could represent one memory from one fiesta I came to. I decided to pick that memory for 3 reasons: it was beautiful, it shows the welcoming nature CNMI people have, and the caring nature they have. Overall, I’m inspired to make this picture to give people a tiny example of how the CNMI cares for everyone no matter what.
