New Mexico

Isleta Elementary School

“These drawings capture the beauty of the state of New Mexico, often referred to as the “Land of Enchantment.” The images include mountains, corn stalks, yucca plants, corn, hornos (bread ovens), an adobe home and hogan, chile, a hot air balloon, a roadrunner, an elk, and a bear, which are all tied to the land and culture.” – Tamara A., Teacher

My inspiration is the greater roadrunner. It is our official state bird of New Mexico. A roadrunner can eat a rattlesnake. Although a roadrunner can fly it spends most of its time on the ground. I love how it can run up to 15 MPH. I began by painting the roadrunner itself bright beautiful colors and then I drew and colored the background to match New Mexico and I used colored pencils for that.
