Pennsylvania

Lynch-Bustin Elementary School

“Some of our fifth graders designed our ornaments. Our art teacher, Lynn U., worked with the students to guide them as they worked.  The ornaments reflect a pride in both rural Pennsylvania, which we call home, and the state as a whole. The kids have represented local landmarks and features that impress them from across the state.” – Matt P., Teacher

Before I even started drawing, I looked up the state symbols. I started with the state tree which is the Eastern Hemlock, which is often used as Christmas trees. The state flowers are the Mountain Laurel. The state insect is a firefly. The barn is not an actual state symbol but red barns specifically are a much-loved sign of Pennsylvania. I noticed that a lot of the state symbols reminded me of Christmas, so I made a Christmas scene. The materials I used were Posca paint pens, alcohol-based markers, and watercolor pens to create this Christmas scene.
