US Virgin Islands
Ricardo Richards Elementary School
“My class’s ornaments are mostly different objects and places that have cultural and social significance to the People of the Virgin Islands. We went on a virtual field trip around the territory and discussed famous places and things that make the Virgin Islands special. All the students chose to draw and used colored pencils, markers, and oil pastels to create their work. We concluded the process with a one-on-one discussion about why they chose their object or place and what insights they gained through the experience.” – Mr. Ian G. and Ms. Genelyn L., Teachers

My drawing is a Moko Jumbie that is believed to protect our islands from bad spirits. Moko Jumbies could also be seen in Carnival and other festivals in the territory. The Ginger Thomas flower is the territorial flower of the Virgin Islands. I drew the Moko Jumbie to tell you that we have protectors of the islands like what the armed forces do. Visit the Virgin Islands and see the Moko Jumbie.
